Parish History

The first service of what became St. Peter's Church was held May 29, 1887, in a private home near the site of the current church.

St. Peter's Mission was organized in June 1888 and became a parish in spring 1890. The parish purchased the present property in 1890, and on Easter Day, April 14, 1895, the doors of the present church were opened. In 1925, the old parish house was replaced with the present structure.

A major capital campaign to renovate the church was launched in 2003. Improvements completed through 2007 include:

  • air conditioning
  • accessibility ramp and handicapped-accessible bathroom
  • additional organ ranks in the rear of the church, refurbishing of old organ ranks, and new organ console
  • relocation of the choir
  • conservation and reframing of unique needlepoint Stations of the Cross
  • new boiler
  • protection of the stained glass

Still to come: new choir seating, improved lighting, full interior painting, and decorative stenciling.

On April 29, 2007, the Very Rev. James Hobson Dunkerley presided over his last Eucharist at St. Peter's. With his retirement, Father Dunkerley ended 37 years as the parish's rector.

The parish's search for a priest-in-charge ended in August 2007 with the calling of the Rev. Sarah K. Fisher. Click here to read more about her.
